A visit to the Agro-ecological project sites in Rwanda

News

On the occasion of the BD meeting, prior to its commencement, the Board of Directors members, Domitillia and Cecilia Su Yeon, paid a visit to the site of the Agro-Ecological Project, managed by the Caritas of the Kabgayi Diocese in Rwanda. This project aims to promote ecological agriculture among young people in the parish, providing them with a sustainable means of livelihood. Primitive, a member of AFI, is actively involved in the project team. She explained that the initiative was launched in 2020 as a training program for the younger generation. The program consisted of a six-month theoretical course followed by three months of practical field training, welcoming participants from different parishes. Among the trainees, there are single mothers and girls, all of whom are provided accommodation in a hostel, and no fees are charged for their participation. The project aligns with the principles outlined in ‘Laudato Si’, the encyclical teachings of Pope Francis.

The farm itself showcases a variety of organically cultivated vegetables, utilizing certain trees and plants for both food and natural fertilizer production. The presence of chickens, cows, and pigs further contributes to the organic resources of the farm. Through this project, the younger generation gains hope in establishing their own farms to support their families. It is a reminder that there is no Planet B, emphasizing the critical role of sustainable and ecological agriculture in mitigating the effects of global warming and climate change, ultimately working towards preserving.
