The Women Skill Development Project in Nepal

Project

The Women’s Skill Development Project in Nepal, initiated by EKATA (meaning “one”) Nepal, aimed to empower women in need in the Kathmandu Valley. The program commenced in 2014 with the goal of training 20 women in sewing skills. The AFI-ICA external project provided funding for the first year in 2014. Despite various challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, migration, lack of motivation, and distance from the training center, the project persevered.

Under the guidance of EKATA’s leadership, Mr. Samar Thapa and Hemanta Thapa, some women who successfully completed the training program now operate their own businesses. They produce a range of items, including T-shirts, winter jackets, and sports attire for both children and adults, which are available for sale at the EKATA Bakery Cafe. This accomplishment is significant, reflecting the dedication and determination of the women and the EKATA leadership.

In 2024, their enterprise stands as a model for self-help promotion programs, showcasing the success that can be achieved through collaborative efforts. It serves as a compelling example of a project supported by the AFI-ICA external initiative, demonstrating the positive impact of such partnerships in creating job opportunities for women in need.
